Validators check to make sure the HTML on your pages is correct. They do this
by checking your page against the Document Type Definition (DTD) you said you
followed. That's what the
<!DOCTYPE ... > line is all
about: it's where you declare which DTD you're following.
HTML Checkers allow you to put your pages through various tests in order for you to see how they do in situations with which you might not be familiar. They require that your pages be published already.
