James C. Wright Middle School opened as Madison Middle School 2000 in August 1993. Its evolution as a charter school is the result of efforts given by hundreds of people from throughout the City of Madison and beyond.This section navigates a complex history using data obtained through district offices, community agencies, students, teachers, and administrators.

1979. South Madison's only middle school (Lincoln) closes.

1983. MMSD crafts an elementary school pairing plan in response to a Title VI Civil Rights action.

1991. Board of Education agrees to a new South Madison Middle School.

1993. Madison Middle School 2000 opens in the temporary Hoyt location.

1994. Board of Education decides to build new school at Bowmann Field.

1997. James Colemon Wright Middle School opens in South Madison
