Curriculum: Afterschool Clubs Wright Middle School offers students the opportunity to participate in more than 30 different afterschool clubs catering to interests ranging from reading and flag football to hair braiding and technology. Students say the hardest thing about having such a variety is deciding which ones to join. Academic
Achievers-Wright Middle School Academic Achievement club
has no members to date. I will continue to encourage Special Education
students to come in for help. One of the pressing problems in Special
Education is the homework completion rate, and the problem of failure
to return completed assignments. When the Academic Achievement Club fulfills
its goals, there should be a mark decrease in the homework problem. We
will need additional tutors, once students realize the help they can get
through participating in the Achievement Club Drill
Team - Students create dance routines to
popular music. Participants may perform at Panther Pride assemblies or
other school functions. Hip-Hop
appreciation-This club teaches students up-to date dance
moves. Choreography, understanding rhythms and combining them into routines
is practiced. MYCAP-The
Minority Youth Career Awareness Project began in 1998 at Wright Middle
School. It is a year-round after school math and science enrichment
program for middle school students of color. Academic skill building,
career exploration, family enhancement and cultural/recreational activities
are the primary focus. A community partnership between MMSD
and Madison Area Technical
College, as well as collaboration with area universities, agencies
and local churches, allow this program to be a huge draw for students
at Wright. MYCAP serves nearly ninety students, a little less than
half of our student population. Children enjoy academic tutorials
with staff and many volunteers from the community, as well as field trips
to campuses, work sites and community events. Lilith
Technology Club-Based on the idea of a West High School (Madison,
WI) student, this club delves deeply into girls using technology. A week-long
summer camp is also offered focusing on girls using technology in the
context of a research question. In the summer of 2001, research topics
included: Women's Health, Environmental Studies and Animal Research. Nehemiah Online Yearbook Open
gym-This activity allows students to engage in any sport of
interest to them. Basketball, football, soccer, wrestling are all taught
without the pressure of competition. |
